Heavens Gate by Vivian Ridler
The inside story of how the opening scenes of a famous Hollywood epic, Heaven's Gate, were filmed in Oxford in April 1980 - a blockbuster movie that notoriously helped bring about the demise of the studio United Artists.
Ridler's diary is diverting but the bulk of the text offers background on the production, as well as a brief description of the film's reception and Cimino's uneasy status as an auteurThere are some gems: Kris Kristofferson fondly referred to the director as the Ayatollah Cimino; John Hurt dubbed him an extremely complex little Napoleon; and Cimino compared himself variously to Stanley Kubrick, John F. Kennedy and Michelangelo. What is striking [today] is not its epic grandiosity, but its complex love triangle and strong social conscience. Not a masterpiece by any means, but the memory of some wonderful shots remains. Keith Hopper, Times Literary Supplement
