He was on a trip to Hong Kong, pondering his personal and professional lives, when the Hector character appeared in his thoughts, and he wrote Hector and the Quest for Happiness without understanding what kind of book he was creating. Hector's enormous success, first in France, then in Germany and other countries, drove him to devote more time to writing and traveling, and he ended up in Vietnam during the height of the SARS epidemic, where he performed psychiatry for a French NGO whose proceeds went toward heart surgery for poor Vietnamese children. He met his future wife, Phuong, in Vietnam, and they now live in Thailand.
