Birgit Sawyer is professor emeritus in medieval history at the University of Trondheim (NTNU), Norway. She earned her Ph.D. in History from Gothenburg University in 1981. Her publications include her thesis on Women and Men in Gesta Danorum, and The Viking-Age Rune-Stones: Custom and Commemoration in Early Medieval Scandinavia. Sawyer co-edited and contributed to The Christianization of Scandinavia: A Symposium Report, and has authored articles on inter alia medieval historiography and medieval women. Together with her husband, Peter Sawyer, she has also published Medieval Scandinavia: From Conversion to Reformation, c. 800-1500 and Die Welt der Wikinger.
