Henry Dry-Bread by Robert Dawson

In the 1960s, a Gypsy rogue called Henry Sherriff met up with a respectable lawyer and from prison sent the lawyer numerous letters and accounts from his cell about his family, family history, folk lore, songs, poems, reminiscences, language and other documents. The dcocuments came to light in the 1980s and were translated, edited and collated by Robert Dawson to form this fascinating book. The Romani language alone is in a form long forgotten by most Gypsies and there are fabulous examples of the secret Irish Traveller language Shelta.
Numerous in specialist Gypsy and Traveller magazines and journals
Robert Dawson began collecting cultural, linguistic and other material from Gypsies at the age of 11. More than 50 years later he has written more thyan 50 books on Gypsies and Traditional Travellers and edited several more. He is an honorary memkber of several Gypsy/Traveller organizations and is president of the Romany and Traveller Family History Society.
