Her Brave Journey by Swati Singh

During her almost-final moments when Kiara is pinned down by a man who claims to love her, fighting to breathe, her life at the mercy of her husband, she repeatedly begs him, Please don't kill me. My parents need me.

Her Brave Journey tells the story of a South Asian woman named Kiara who is a survivor of adversities, including domestic abuse.

Even in today's #MeToo era, with women and men sharing their stories of assault and abuse, the topic of domestic abuse is still obscured, especially in the South Asian community. Kiara, a member of that community, seeks the strength to challenge patriarchy as she begins to recognize the pretenses of the white picket fence dream, where marriage and children are the only measure of happiness and prosperity, and dares to defy it. The story shows the ups and downs of Kiara's journey from her childhood to mid-forties. Her journey begins when she immigrates from India to the United States as a child in the 1980s. Eventually, she finds her independence and gets married, but finds herself psychologically trapped in an abusive marriage.

Stuck in the vicious and confusing cycle of abuse, Kiara does some soul searching by visiting a wellness retreat in India, where despite feeling detached from God, she feels attached to spirituality. This spiritual awakening helps her understand her inner power and bravery. Now she realizes how she's protected herself her entire life. She's stronger on her own and braver than she thinks. Go inside the life of Kiara and follow her brave journey as she reclaims her life and discovers her inner warrior.

Swati Singh comes from a small town Deoghar in Jharkhand, India. She studied before her graduation in Deoghar and then moved for her post graduation to the University of Calcutta, Kolkata. She is now based in Gurgaon and is pursuing her Ph.D on Kipling in the University of Rajasthan. She comes from a family of academicians, and from a vast majority of the Indian middle class who - in the pursuit of their dreams - leave their small town homes in the search of brighter career opportunities for the mega cities of India. The transition from a small town to a metropolis involves necessary changes and adaptations to a new culture. The story of the average middle class Indian would find major similarities with Kipling's own background. The idea for writing this book came up in a chance meeting on a Jaipur-Delhi train when, conversing with a fellow passenger, it suddenly dawned on her how Kipling excites interest even today. In the course of her research work, she realised how this great writer is still so much in the shadows. Kipling claims universal recognition through his The Jungle Books and she wants to reintroduce Kipling to critics, scholars and the curious lay reader.
