Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008), a New Zealander, was born in Auckland and served in the New Zealand Air Force during WWII. After being knighted for climbing Mount Everest in 1953, he went on to accomplish a slew of other firsts before founding the Himalayan Trust, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of Himalayans.
