Higher Psychology by Gerard Keegan

The first comprehensive text tailored to the curriculum of the Scottish Qualifications Authority, "Higher Psychology: Approaches and Methods" is the ideal textbook for the Higher Psychology course. The content of this book is specifically driven by the curriculum content, learning outcomes, performance criteria and the internal/external assessments for Higher Psychology as contained within the SQA specification. Readers will develop an ability to explain the main theoretical approaches and research methods found in psychology and understand the applications and limitations of these approaches. They will also be encouraged to interpret, analyse and critically evaluate psychological theories, evidence and research methods. Written by a highly experienced teacher with an intimate knowledge of the Scottish Psychology specifications, it will be invaluable to all students of the compulsory approaches and methods unit of the Higher Psychology course as well as mature Intermediate students, those doing Higher National Psychology Unit A, and anyone new to psychology at university level. The book promotes an understanding of the approaches, key concepts, methods and applications underpinning the scientific discipline of psychology. Other features include: structured assessment questions; interactive activities; links to online teaching & learning exercises; and, end of chapter summaries.
I liked the overall impression of the publication and as a tutor of psychology myself I could appreciate that there was comprehensive coverage in a down-to-earth wayI particularly like the sections on the psychoanalytic approach and the biological approach. Getting these topic areas right in balance can be tricky but Mr Keegan has done a good job here, ! I warmed to the author within the first few pages of the introduction where I was impressed with his honesty. His preface explains his love of psychology and a bit about his background which creates confidence that the man 'knows his stuff'. -- Glo Potter, Principal Community Learning Worker, K This book is eminently readable. It can be used as the central text of a course or easily dipped into for reference. Presentation, content and readability are all first class. Modern textbooks have to compete with the television and videos. This gives them a run for their money. -- Times Educational Supplement, Scotland 20030221
