Hill Walking in Wales by Peter Hermon

These two volumes are designed to explore the delights of the Welsh hills, including those beyond the popular ranges of Snowdonia. The author brings in not only the summits but the mountain lakes as well. The mountain groups are arranged alphabetically and the two volumes cover the following: Vol. 1: Arans, Arenigs, Berwyns, Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons, Carneddau, Cwmdeuddwr hills, Dovey hills; and Vol. 2: Ffestiniog hills, Fforest Fawr, Glyders, Hirnants, Mynydd Du, Nantlle/Hebog hills, Plynlimon, Radnor Forest, Rhinogs, Siabod/Moelwyns, Snowdon, Tarrens. Each chapter contains: a list of peaks and lakes in each mountain group; a diagrammatic map of the group; a general overview of the group; the main ways up each of the peaks; high-level walks; lower-level walks; and walks for easier days. This book is absolutely essential for all lovers of the Welsh landscape.
Peter Hemon's first acquaintance with the hills was at the tender age of seven when he was terrified at being taken up Thorpe Cloud in Dovedale. Educated at Nottingham high School he was a frequent trekker on Kinder Scout and remembers Youth Hostelling over the Hard Knott and Wrynose passes when they were still rough farm tracks. For most of his working life he was an executive with BOAC and British Airways but, despite travelling the world, and a particular affection for the Grand Canyon, the lure of the British hills never paled. Peter has scaled the peaks of Lakeland, Wales and the Pennines many times but it was some years before his Welsh wanderings took him outside the confines of Snowdonia and he discovered the vast, unknown highlands that stretch all the way to Swansea Bay. A whole new world to conquer. Hence this book.
