
Historic Clapham by Michael Green
Individual chapters cover prehistoric beginnings, Roman occupation, thriving Saxon, Norman and medieval settlements, growth in the seventeenth century and, finally, the great change in the character of the place when the great mansion of Clapham Place was erected, to be followed in the eighteenth century by many others in the locality. This is the first history of Clapham to draw on archaeology and original documents.
Until his retirement Michael Green was Inspector of Ancient Monuments and Buildings for English Heritage. He is a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.He lives in Northside Clapham Common.
