History of Art by H W Janson
This classic survey of Western art remains the standard both in terms of scholarship and art reproduction. Now in its sixth edition, the text has undergone several significant changes. Rewritten in a more accessible style and redesigned to be even more visually appealing, this already sumptuously illustrated book has been further enhanced by the inclusion of over 150 new illustrations, approximately 75% of which are in colour. Updated maps, bibliography, Website directory and a glossary all contribute to making this the indispensable art reference.
H.W. Janson was Professor of Fine Arts at New York University and its graduate centre, the Institute of Fine Arts. He made extraordinary contributions to a popular understanding of art, beginning with The Story of Painting and Picture History of Painting in the 1950s. Anthony F. Janson, art historian, teacher and museum curator, has written widely on European and American art from the Renaissance to the modern era. He worked closely with his father to revise the highly successful History of Art for Young People and has been the revising author of History of Art since 1982.
