
A History of Fashion by Douglas Gorsline
A visual study of historical dress, pinpointing the key developments in each period from the ancients to the 20th century. After a brief review of the ancient world, the book moves on to European trends from the medieval period to World War I. Also included are American styles, covered in detail from 1840.
Douglas Gorsline was an artist and writer. Gorsline worked with many types of forms, including lithography, painting, and etching. In addition to more formal artistic pursuits, he wrote and illustrated several children's books, an illustrated guide to the history of costume, as well as an edition of Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel. He also wrote his own novel, Farm Boy. Gorsline died in 1985.
