Didier Grumbach is one of fashion's most understated, yet influential and famous leaders. With Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé, he co-founded Saint-Laurent Rive Gauche in 1966. He worked in Givenchy Nouvelle Boutique with Hubert de Givenchy from 1968 to 1973. Grumbach founded Créateurs & Industriels in 1971 to bridge the gap between designers and the industry, and he hosted the first exhibits of designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Issey Miyake, and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac in that context. He recognized Thierry Mugler's talent early on and formed and became the chairman of the company that bears his name in 1978.
After that, he was the chairman of Yves Saint Laurent, Inc. He joined the Institut Français de la Mode's staff in 1985, first as Director of Studies, then as Dean of the Professorial Staff. He was elected chairman of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à -Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode in 1998. Histoires de la Mode, which he initially published in French in 1993 and updated in 2008 and 2014, has been translated into a number of languages, including Chinese, Portuguese, and Romanian.
