Stephen G.Brush studied chemistry and physics (at Harvard and Oxford) and worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on theoretical physics research. His group at Livermore demonstrated that a gas of electrons may condense to a solid at low temperatures and high densities (ignoring quantum effects). He also did research in history of science, and shifted to that field full-time in 1968, after being inspired by a graduation course with Thomas Kuhn at Harvard. He's written books on the kinetic theory of gases, planetary physics, and other subjects.
