Oliver Rackham was the most accomplished botanist of his generation. The History of the Countryside, Trees and Woodland in the British Landscape, and Ancient Woodland and the Woodlands, which was the Collins New Naturalist series' 100th volume, are among his works. He was a Fellow of Corpus Christi College for 50 years and was Honorary Professor of Historical Ecology at Cambridge University. He was a Fellow of the British Naturalists' Association and an Honorary Member of the British Ecological Society.
