A History of the Easter Rising in 50 Objects by John Gibney

In this book John Gibney tells the story of the Rising and its aftermath through 50 objects that survive from that time. Some of these are what you might expect – documents, uniforms, weapons and flags – but others are quirkier objects, like the cricket bat that died for Ireland, Sean Mac Diarmada's hurley, the teacups the Pearse brothers used for their last cup of tea with their family, Thomas Kent's rosary beads and Kathleen Lynn's prison biscuits. This fresh perspective makes for a very readable book that will appeal to the lay person interested in history, but also provide plenty of new information for the enthusiast.
John Gibney holds a doctorate in History from TCD and has been a research fellow at the University of Notre Dame in the USA and at NUI Galway. He has written several books on Irish history and produced an acclaimed radio documentary on the folklore of inner-city Dublin.
