Nigel Ryan is the author of A Hitch or Two in Afghanistan, co-author of The Scholar and the Gypsy and translator of many of Simenon's Maigret mysteries. He was educated at Ampleforth and Oxford, and for at time taught at Eton. His distinguished career in broadcasting includes stints as Editor of ITN News, Vice-President of NBC News and Director of Programmes at Thames Television. He lives between London and Versailles.
