Homestretch by Velma Pollard
David and Edith are happy to return home to Jamaica, having spent several dreary years living in England. Laura, their niece and surrogate child, is delighted to see them again. But for Brenda, Laura's friend, arriving home from the USA and England to 'find herself', the adjustment is not so smooth.... In Homestretch, Velma Pollard has shown great sensitivity in the unravelling of her characters' various life stories. Wistful notalgia and joyful homecoming are delicately interwoven with tangible descriptions of Jamaican life, both past and present.Velma Pollard is a Senior Lecturer in Language Education in the Faculty of Education of the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. Her major research interests are Creole Languages of the Anglophone Caribbean, The language of Caribbean Literature, and Caribbean women's writing.
Ms Pollard is also involved in creative writing, and has published poems and short stories in regional and international journals. She has on the market two volumes of poetry: Crown Point and Other Poems (1988) and Shame Trees Don't Grow Here (1992), and a volume of short fiction: Considering Woman (1989). Her novella Karl, which won the Casa de las Americas literary award (1992) is included in the book Karl and other stories (1994), also published by Longman.
