Homing by Alistair Moffat

After the deaths of his grandmother and his father, Alistair Moffat discovered that they had kept hidden what they saw as a shaming secret. Moffat soon realised that he had grown up in ignorance of his family's past. In moving detail, he describes his search for the reality of his grandmother's life, and as he uncovers more of her story he begins to understand why she, his father and others have been so secretive. Homing captures a lost world of terraced council houses, gardens with picket fences and of local grocery vans, re-runs of the Second World War played out among the potato patches, and of heroes like Dan Dare, Digby and Jack Brabham. It is an unforgettable evocation of a post-war childhood and a tender exploration of a past that will be familiar to many.
'What is important is the chatty and charming way Moffat makes our own cultural past accessible to us' -- Independent on Sunday 'Will surely become a classic of its kind.. a realistically chill modern attitude towards the raw social and cultural limitations of the period' -- The Times 20040904 'A brave, beautiful and rawly emotional memoir' -- Sunday Herald 20040904 'I left Homing charmed and moved ... There can be no greater praise for a writer than he opens eyes and changes minds, and Homing does that with style and talent' -- Glasgow Herald 20040904 'Moffat's childhood recollections are vivid and detailed' -- Allan Massie, The Scotsman 20040904 'Quaint but touching ... the book provides an equal dose of pathos and humour. Moffat describes a bygone era' -- Good Book Guide 20040901
