Florence's hot pies are sold from the aptly named Paradise Pie shop. They are legendary, not only with the tramcar operator but also the hard-up and hungry during the Depression years. Warm-hearted Florence is the mainstay at home too. In her mainly female household, there also lives Manny, a casualty of the First World War who is now working as Florence's assistant. Hers is a shoulder to cry on when love affairs fail, but will Florence ever find the time to consider her own future happiness?
Sheila Newberry has nine children and twenty grandchildren, who are her inspiration for writing. Robert Hale has published many of her novels including Bicycles and Blackberries and The Little Train Home.
