How Do We Know Who We Are? by Arnold M Ludwig
The ways biographers bring their subjects to life are not unlike the methods psychiatrists use to uncover the self of a patient or from the ways we construct our own personal identity. Following this premise, Arnold Ludwig conducted 21 in-depth interviews with some of the most distinguished biographers working today to better examine the nature of self. Filled with comments from a group of professional biographers, along with his own clinical observations, this study explores how we construct our sense of self and investigates the personal myths that sustain us and give our lives meaning. This book is intended for a general audience and academics and students in the field of psychiatry and psychology.
Arnold M. Ludwig is the E.A. Edwards Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He is the former winner of the prestigious Hofheimer Prize Award given by the American Psychiatric Association for his research on alcoholism and LSD. He is the author of seven books and over 100 articles or book chapters, covering such topics as altered states of consciousness, schizophrenia, hysteria, cravings, disability, sensory overload, and the nature of the self. His investigations over the past ten years have focused on the relationship of mental illness to creative achievement, as well as the nature of greatness.
