He joined the New York Herald after conducting freelance journalism and attended an expedition to Abyssinia in 1868. Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Persia, and India were among the countries he visited. He is well known for his African explorations and his search for David Livingstone, whom he met in Tanganyika.
