David L. Hammes has taught economics at universities in Canada, Australia, and the United States since the early 1970s. He has been in the economics department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo since 1988. Hammes' writings on economic topics, including the early history of the Federal Reserve System, have appeared in many academic journals in the field. His earlier book, Shaping Our Nation, was published in 1988. Hammes lives in Hilo, Hawaii, with his wife Kathy. They have two grown sons, Mark and Steven, living in California.
