How to Survive a Plague by David France

One of Entertainment Weekly's Top 10 Nonfiction Books of the Decade

A definitive history of the successful battle to halt the AIDS epidemic, here is the incredible story of the grassroots activists whose work turned HIV from a mostly fatal infection to a manageable disease. Almost universally ignored, these men and women learned to become their own researchers, lobbyists, and drug smugglers, established their own newspapers and research journals, and went on to force reform in the nation's disease-fighting agencies. From the creator of, and inspired by, the seminal documentary of the same name, How to Survive a Plague is an unparalleled insider's account of a pivotal moment in the history of American civil rights.

David France is a well-known international performer and educator. He is the creator and Executive Director of Revolution of Hope, a Boston-based non-profit that uses music to promote social change. He was recently named one of Boston's Top 100 Most Influential People of Color and one of the United States' Top 40 Urban Innovators Under 40. In 2009, he was named Concertmaster of The YouTube Symphony, the first orchestra to be selected through an online audition. He's shared the stage with legends like Kenny Rogers, Josh Groban, and Quincy Jones.

The Associated Press, The New York Times, Time Magazine, NBC Nightly News, and BBC Radio have all highlighted him. He has presented as a keynote speaker at Harvard Kennedy School, Babson Entrepreneurship Forum, Lean Gap, and Endevrr, a high school entrepreneurship program at UPENN, where he also served as a mentor. He is the creator of Ziryab Ventures, a think tank for young entrepreneurs, as well as an Associate Producer on the Emmy-nominated television show Ambitious Adventures. When he's not juggling many projects, you'll find him riding around Boston's streets, making delectable dinners late at night, and touring the world on a shoestring budget.

He feels that giving your life away maximizes your happiness in this life.
