The text of this edition of one of the finest and funniest epistolary novels is taken from the first edition of 1771 and includes the illustrations that Thomas Rowlandson added to the novel in 1790-93.
James L. Thorson is associate professor of English at the University of New Mexico. He has also taught at Oxford University, the University Kiril i Metodij in Skopje, Yugoslavia, the University of Nebraska, and Cornell University, from which he received his Ph.D. He is the author of articles on British and American literature and is the editor of Yugoslav Perspectives on American Literature. He has been the recipient of fellowships from Jesus College, Oxford, and the Fulbright Commission as well as grants from the University of New Mexico.
