I Hate English! by Ellen Levine

"With unusual sympathy and humor, Levine presents the stages of learning the language of a new country.... Right on target and sure to be useful." - Kirkus Reviews, starred review

In the Underground Railroad, how did people get away? Although Ellen Levine enjoys reading and writing fiction, she has primarily written nonfiction for young readers. Writing nonfiction allows me access to the story's backstory. Even if they lived 200 years ago, I appreciate learning new things and meeting new people. True heroes, according to Levine, aren't always on TV or in the headlines.

They can be ordinary people who are willing to put their lives on the line for causes they care about. Nonfiction is a fantastic approach to introduce young readers to real people who have demonstrated incredible bravery in the face of adversity. We all have the ability to achieve our goals. She says that one does not have to be an adult to participate.

While she's not writing, Levine enjoys teaching young readers about the thrill of research and the value of accuracy. Many young people believe that research is tedious; you go to an encyclopedia, copy facts, give it a title, and label it as a report. Ellen demonstrates how to obtain additional, more fascinating information using her books as examples. I may not use the exact phrases, but I discuss primary and secondary sources with young people.

When I speak with third graders, I ask them, Where would I go if I wanted to learn about being a third grader? Ellen, for example, observed an emergency procedure on acow for If You Were an Animal Doctor. While doing research for Ready, Aim, Fire! in Wyoming, She recalls, That gave me such a strong emotion towards this individual.

It is also a element of the research process. Ellen Levine is the author of numerous critically praised novels and nonfiction works. I Hate English! If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon, If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island, If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon The New York Times awarded her book Freedom's Children: Young Civil Rights Activists Speak Their Own Story one of the Ten Best Children's Books of the Year, and the American Library Association named it Best Book for Young Adults.

Ellen spends part of her time in New York City and part of it in Salem, New York.
