Ice Lake by John Farrow
Brilliant, unorthodox Montreal detective Emile Cinq Mars has a complex case on his hands when a corpse with a bullet in its neck is found floating in a fishing hole cut into the ice of a frozen lake. The victim had shadowy connections with the pharmaceutical industry, but that's just the start.
John Farrow is the pseudonym for a distinguished Canadian author of literary fiction who lives near Montreal . Farrow grew up on the city's rough streets, in an immigrant neighbourhood. He left school early, and his work to support himself as a young writer included being waiter in a Mafia-run bar, and for several years driving a taxi by night, which contributed to his particular appreciation of Montreal life. His first novel as John Farrow, City of Ice, is available as an Arrow paperback.
