Ice Princess by Kay Woodward

Frankie lives for ice-skating, and has her heart set on becoming a star. So it's a dream come true when she's talent-spotted at her local ice rink and whisked away to train for the Olympics. But Frankie learns that Skate School isn't just world-class, it's also ultra-tough, and her competitive classmates are so cool they're practically sub-zero. Does she have what it takes to be a winner?
a fantastic present to give or receive * Primary Times *
A brilliant bookKay Woodward is definitely one of my favourite authors! The next book, On Thin Ice, is just as great! This is one of the best books I've ever read! I rate this book...5/5! Read the complete review at: * The Milelong Bookshelf blog *
The first of a new series, the exciting Skate School books promise to be the 'coolest' read in town...Any girl who dreams of becoming an ice princess will be performing a triple toe-loop if she finds Skate School in her Christmas stocking! But your young miss doesn't HAVE to be an ice skating fan to enjoy this tale of the roller coaster journey to ice stardom because it is also packed with the all the trials and tribulations of life in a boarding school. As well as all the thrills and spills (literally!) of training to be an ice star, Skate School perfectly combines all those concerns of any young teenager ... excitement, glamour, ambition, competition, friendship and fun. * Lancashire Evening Post *
A light, enjoyable read, the new Skate School series holds its own against other entries in the "boarding school" genre. It is sufficiently skating-savvy to appeal to knowledgeable skaters without confusing non-skaters. Though there are several boys featured, the story's focus is on Frankie, and a hint of romance will likely ensue. * iSkate Magazine *
I loved it. I hope that others will read it and that will encourage them to start figure skating...like Frankie...like me. * Rebecca Miller (age 9) - iSkate Magazine *
Ice Princess was a brilliant book. It focused on the main character Frankie trying to achieve her dream of becoming... an ice princess. This author was new to me, since I don't think I've ever read anything by her. I definitely think I'll be buying the next in the series, On Thin Ice, because this book was brilliant - one of the best books I've ever read! I rate this book...5/5! * Chicklish blog - review by Amber, aged 11 *
I'm hooked! I've yet to find a school series that I don't like. Skate school is jostling for a space with my other favourite stories. Read the complete review at: * Nayu's Reading Corner book blog *
With writing as fresh and clean as the ice on which her plucky heroine leaps and twirls to success, Kay Woodward's story of a boarding school nestled in the Swiss mountains, where Olympic hopefuls are trained as world-beating figure-skaters, is a genuine delight, and very much more Noel Streatfeild (Ballet Shoes) than Francine Pascal (Sweet Valley High). All the elements you would expect to find in a ripping yarn for gels are there: a homely but good-hearted central character whose natural talent has yet to be nurtured; an exotic mentor with a chilly exterior but mysteriously passionate past; a spoiled, vain, unprincipled rival - and of course, a glittering prize to be won through determination and Doing The Right Thing. Yet somehow, Skate School manages to be original, non-clichéd, entertaining, and totally up-to-date. Cool! * Teach Primary *
