Impressionists by the Sea by John House
This work considers the pictorial representation of the seaside during the nineteenth century. From the romantic role - focusing on the evocation of the sublime force of nature, to the holidaymaker in all their relaxed glory. House also explores how the Impressionists used a new approach to painting to capture the effects of weather and light on the coastline.John House is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He is the author of, among other works, Monet: Nature into Art, published by Yale University Press.
