In Black and White by Alexandra Wilson

Alexandra, a young mixed-race barrister, gives us a fresh perspective on a broken criminal justice system still dominated by a privileged few.
In Black and White is an absolute triumph; a compelling and courageous memoir forcing the legal profession to confront uncomfortable truths about race and class in our justice systemAlexandra Wilson is a bold and vital voice. This is a book that urgently needed to be written, and urgently needs to be read by everybody inside, and outside, the justice system. * The Secret Barrister, bestselling author of The Secret Barrister *
A riveting book in the best tradition of courtroom dramas but from the fresh perspective of a young female mixed-race barrister. That Alexandra is "often" mistaken for the defendant shows how important her presence at the bar really is. * Matt Rudd, Deputy Editor, The Sunday Times Magazine *
I would highly recommend In Black and White. The personal narrative of a young female lawyer of mixed heritage who is defying the soft bigotry of low expectations by sharing her journey, inspires us all to do the same in our own way, and this is a powerful message which needs to be shared. * Dr Tunde Okewale MBE, founder of Urban Lawyers *
An inspirational, clear-eyed account of life as a junior barrister is made all the more exceptional by the determination, passion, humanity and drive of its author. Anyone interested in seeing how the law really works should read it. * Sarah Langford, bestselling author of In Your Defence *
This is the story of a young woman who overcame all the obstacles a very old profession could throw at her, and she survived, with her integrity intact. * Benjamin Zephaniah *
A refreshingly honest account of the challenges faced by a young female barrister of mixed heritage * Judy Khan QC, Joint Head of Garden Court Chambers *
Alexandra Wilson is a junior barrister. She grew up in Essex and is the eldest of four children. Her mother is White British, her father is Black British and her paternal grandparents were born in Jamaica and came to England as part of the Windrush generation. Alexandra studied at the University of Oxford and was awarded two prestigious scholarships, enabling her to research the impact of police shootings in the US on young people's attitudes to the police. She went on to study for a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and her Master of Laws at BPP University in London. Alexandra was awarded the first Queen's scholarship by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, a scholarship awarded to students showing exceptional promise in a career at the Bar. Alongside her paid family and criminal law work, Alexandra helps to facilitate access to justice by providing legal representation for disenfranchised minorities and others on a pro-bono basis.
