In Certain Circles by Elizabeth Harrower

Zoe Howard is 17 when her brother, Russell, introduces her to Stephen Quayle. Aloof and harsh, Stephen is unlike anyone she has ever met, 'a weird, irascible character out of some dense Russian novel'. His sister, Anna, is shy and thoughtful, 'a little orphan'. Zoe and Russell, Stephen and Anna: they may come from different social worlds but all four will spend their lives moving in and out of each other's shadow. Set amid the lush gardens and grand stone houses that line the north side of Sydney Harbour, In Certain Circles is an intense psychological drama.

Elizabeth Harrower was born in Sydney in 1928, but she and her family moved to Newcastle when she was eleven years old. Harrower relocated to London in 1951. She went on a lot of trips and started writing fiction. Her debut novel, Down in the City, was released in 1957, and The Long Prospect was published the following year. She returned to Sydney in 1959 and began working for the ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald as a book reviewer.

Her only novel not set in Sydney, The Catherine Wheel, was released in 1960. It recounts the story of an Australian law student in London. In 1966, The Watch Tower was released. She worked for Macmillan in publishing from 1961 to 1967. Harrower continued to produce short fiction but no further novels were published.

Her work is spartan, clever, and merciless in its portrayals of men and women. Several of her colleagues admired her, notably Patrick White and Christina Stead, and she is without a doubt one of Australia's most prominent postwar writers. Elizabeth Harrower is a Sydney-based writer. Fiona McGregor is a performance artist and author from Sydney.

He has written five books and she writes novels, articles, short stories, and reviews. Indelible Ink is her most recent book.
