In 1958, he completed his education at Bowman-Gray and completed his residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital from 1962 to 1964. He then completed a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute. Since then, he has worked as a neuro-ophthalmologist at Yale, where he also serves as the director of the Neuro-ophthalmology Service. He also serves as a Senior Consultant to the Army's Surgeon General at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, which he frequently visits.
