Inanna by Wolkstein

A fresh retelling of the ancient texts about Ishtar, the world's first goddess. Illustrated with visual artifacts of the period. A great masterpiece of universal literature.--Mircea Eliade

For almost 35 years, Diane Wolkstein has been teaching, performing, and writing. She has written several award-winning folklore books, including The Miracle Orange Tree and Other Haitian Folktales and Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth: Her Tales and Hymns from Sumer. Wolkstein, who is known for her thorough study and wide range as a performer, visited Australia three times while working on this piece. She lives in New York City and delivers storytelling seminars all around the world. In Her Own Words...I'm a big fan of storytelling.

They provide me with courage, inspiration, and enormous joy. I've been telling stories at the Hans Christian Andersen statue in Central Park for thirty years. As my audience enters stories, I enjoy seeing their eyes light up. Tales allow us to travel to the farthest reaches of the universe and into the most intimate parts of the human heart.

They open doors to possibilities. They allow us to experiment with various emotions and characteristics. Gardening, dancing, swimming, painting, and making up stories with music are some of my other favorite pastimes. Rachel Zucker, my daughter, is a poet, photographer, and mother to a young son named Moses.
