Rizal was born in Calamba and grew up in a mestizo family of eleven children who lived and worked on a Dominican friars' farm. He excelled in school and won several poetry contests as a child. He studied philosophy and law at the University of Santo Tomas before deciding to pursue ophthalmology after learning of his mother's blindness. He went to Madrid to study medicine in 1882 before travelling to Germany to give Tagalog courses.

Rizal completed his novel Touch Me Not (1887) in Heidelberg, while working with pioneering ophthalmologist Otto Becker. Touch Me Not is a semi-autobiographical novel that attacks the activities of the Catholic Church and the Spanish Empire in his home Philippines, and it is now considered a national epic alongside its sequel The Reign of Greed (1891). He returned to Manila in 1892 and created La Liga Filipina, a secret social reform organization. He was exiled to Zamboanga province in that year, where he erected a school, a hospital, and a water supply system.

The Katipunan, a movement for independence from Spanish authority, began to take shape in Manila around this time, eventually leading to the Philippine Revolution in 1896. Rizal was detained while heading to Cuba via Spain for his anti-colonial writings and association with active Katipunan members. He was murdered by firing squad on the outskirts of Manila on December 30, 1896, and buried in an unmarked grave.
