Into the Light of Things by George J Leonard
This revision of avant-garde history traces a direct line back from John Cage, pop and conceptual art, through the Futurists, to Whitman, Emerson, Ruskin, Carlyle and Wordsworth, showing how the art of everyday objects, often thought an exclusively contemporary phenomenon, actually began as far back as 1800. In recovering the links between such seemingly disparate figures, this work is intended to provide a better understanding of modern culture.George J. Leonard is a Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities at San Francisco State University, and has taught at Yale, Scripps College/Claremont and in Beijing. Among his many scholarly publications, including Into theLight of Things: the Art of the Commonplace fromWordsworth to John Cage, Leonard is also the author of popular novels, Beyond Control, (Macmillan) and The IceCathedral (Simon and Schuster).
