Introduction to Cancer Biology by Robin Hesketh
This concise overview of the fundamental concepts of cancer biology is ideal for those with little or no background in the field. A summary of global cancer patterns introduces students to the general principles of how cancers arise and the risk factors involved. By focusing on fundamental examples of the signalling pathways within cells, the functional effects of DNA damage are explained. Later chapters then build on this foundation to provide a comprehensive summary of the major signalling pathways that affect tumour development. Current therapeutic strategies are reviewed, along with a discussion of methods for tumour detection and biomarker identification. Finally, the impact of whole genome sequencing is discussed, bringing students up to date with key recent developments in the field. From basic principles to insights into cutting-edge research, this book will enable the reader to move into the cancer field with confidence.
'A comprehensive, engagingly written, accurate overview of a topic that has continued to rapidly evolve in recent yearsAs our knowledge of cancer's molecular underpinnings advances, it is essential to remain up-to-date and this book delivers. Each chapter is full of concise explanations and wonderful illustrations that convey complex concepts in a straightforward way. I highly recommend this valuable resource to all students of biology and medicine.' Andrew Lam, M.D., University of Massachusetts Medical School
'The new edition of Introduction to Cancer Biology has been well worth waiting for. It develops logically from the previous edition and brings our current understanding of all aspects of the nature of cancer biology up to date. Central to the book are chapters dealing with DNA, oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes and signalling pathways. The chapters convey the historical development of these ideas into our current understanding. Thus, the book is suitable for students, undergraduates and postgraduates with an interest or need, to develop an overview of cancer research.' Tony Bradshaw, Oxford Brookes University
'This textbook has easy to understand figures and clearly laid out chapters. My favourite is the logical roadmap describing how one should teach using this textbook. I never saw that before. I think the students will appreciate the 'pause and recap' throughout the book; what a great way to check your knowledge one step at a time.' Luiza Nogaj, Mount Saint Mary's University Los Angeles
'A comprehensive look at cancer biology and treatment with chemical-level precision.' John Schmidt, Villanova University, Pennsylvania
