An Introduction to Continuum Mechanics by Morton E Gurtin
This book presents an introduction to the classical theories of continuum mechanics; in particular, to the theories of ideal, compressible, and viscous fluids, and to the linear and nonlinear theories of elasticity. These theories are important, not only because they are applicable to a majority of the problems in continuum mechanics arising in practice, but because they form a solid base upon which one can readily construct more complex theories of material behavior. Further, although attention is limited to the classical theories, the treatment is modern with a major emphasis on foundations and structureMorton E. Gurtin is a Carnegie Mellon University Alumni Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. His work focuses on nonlinear continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, with a current focus on applications to materials science challenges. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) awarded him the 2004 Timoshenko Medal in recognition of remarkable contributions to the field of applied mechanics; the Agostinelli Award (an annual prize in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical physics); Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Italy; Dottore Honoris Causa, Civil Engineering, University of Rome; Distinction Professor, University of Rome; Distinguish Professor, University of Rome; Distinguish Professor Gurtin is the author of Configurational Forces as Fundamental Concepts in Continuum Physics, An Introduction to Continuum Mechanics, Thermomechanics of Developing Phase Boundary in the Plane, Topics in Finite Elasticity, The Linear Theory of Elasticity, Handbuch der Physik, Volume VIa/2, and Wave Propagation in Dissipative Materials ( in addition to his other archive research articles).
