Introduction to Solid State Physics by Charles Kittel

Since the publication of the first edition over 50 years ago, Introduction to Solid State Physics has been the standard solid state physics text for physics majors. The author's goal from the beginning has been to write a book that is accessible to undergraduate and consistently teachable. The emphasis in the book has always been on physics rather than formal mathematics. With each new edition, the author has attempted to add important new developments in the field without sacrificing the book's accessibility and teachability.

From 1951 to 1978, Charles Kittel was a professor of solid state physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He had previously worked at Bell Labs in the solid state physics group. His physics work as an undergraduate was a M.I.T. and at Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory. His doctorate was earned at the University of Wisconsin.

He is a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received the Oliver Buckley Award for Solid State Physics and the American Association of Physics Teachers' Oersted Medal. He is the author of a popular solid state physics introductory textbook.
