The Irish Ulysses by Maria Tymoczko
Challenges previous readings of James Joyce's "Ulysses" and argues that literary scholarship has distorted our understanding of this novel by focusing on its English and continental literary sources alone. It demonstrates Joyce's use of Irish imagery, myths and literary modes. It portrays Joyce as an author caught between English and Irish literary traditions, one who remakes English-language literature with his own country's literary heritage.
Maria Tymoczko is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts.
