Isambard Kingdom Brunel by Adrian Vaughan
This text chronicles the life of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and diverges from Rolt's classic study of Brunel which largely omitted the more unsavoury aspects of his character. Alongside his great achievements, this book describes a man who was obstinate, dictatorial and, in the end, paranoid.Adrian Vaughan began learning the signaling routine in 1950 and became a volunteer porter at Challow station in 1953, where he learnt to drive the shunting engine and the complexities of the signaling laws. He became a paid porter at Challow after four and a half years in the Army, and then a signalman at Uffington.
