The Island of the Women and Other Stories by George Mackay Brown
In these six stories George Mackay Brown leads us back along the sweep of Orkney's past and beyond even that to the remoteness of fable. He reveals the timelessness of the lived moment and the constants of island life in the harvest of sea and land and the compulsions of voyage and homecoming.
`A brilliant writer. . His prose is simple but not naive, lyrical but not whimsical; he combines great imagination, which takes him into the realms of the mystical, with a firm rooting in reality and a deep understanding of humanity.' Kate Grimond, Spectator; `Unpretentious and wonderfully original . . . [He was] able to articulate in language what most us can only dimly glimpse.' Euan Cameron, Sunday Times; `Truly magical'. Paul Cole, Birmingham Evening Mail
George Mackay Brown was born in Orkney in 1921 and died there in 1996. Following his first book in 1954 he published many more, including plays, novels, and collections of short stories and poems. His Portrait of Orkney is the best possible introduction to the islands he rarely left. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has set to music many of his poems and other works. In 1988 he was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Golden Bird. In 1994 his novel Beside the Ocean of Time was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and judged Scottish book of the Year by the Saltire Society.
