Campbell has worked on all seven continents as a teacher, ecologist, and explorer. He has won the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Prize, the PEN Martha Albrand Award, the Burroughs Medal, and the Lannan Award for Nonfiction for his book The Crystal Desert: Summers in Antarctica. Dr. Campbell is a biology professor and the Henry R. Grinnell College's Luce Professor of Nations and the Global Environment.
