The author looks at several aspects of Turner's life - his training and working methods, extensive travels, relationship to ancient and modern art, patrons, writing, and intellectual interests - which he relates to specific examples of his work.John Gage is currently a Reader in the History of Western Art at Cambridge University, where he was previously Head of the Department of History of Art. He won the Mitchell Prize for the History of Art in 1994 for his most recent book, Color and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Ancient to Abstraction. He is an expert on color and Turner.
