Dumas Malone (1892-1986) taught history at Yale and Columbia universities and was the director of the Harvard University Press for seven years before becoming the University of Virginia's biographer-in-residence. He has received numerous awards for his work as a historian and biographer, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Thomas Jefferson Award, and the John F. Kennedy Award. The Kennedy Medal of Freedom, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, have been awarded to him.
