Jimmy Forsyth by Jimmy Forsyth

Jimmy Forsyth's photographs from the 1950s and 1960s constitute a unique record of a working-class community in west Newcastle at the moment of its disappearance. This new book reproduces a selection of his finest work, including many less familiar photographs, some never published before, with an introduction that describes Jimmy's life on Tyneside.
Jimmy Forsyth was born in Barry, Soth Wales, in 1913 and came to Tyneside in 1943 as part of the war effort. An accident which led to the loss of sight in his right eye made it difficult for him to find work after the war. In 1954 he bought a cheap camera and began taking photographs along Scotswood Road in Newcastle, where he lived. Recognition came in 1981 when he was 'discovered' by Newcastle's Side Gallery. He won the Halina Award for photography in 1987.
