A Journey Round the World by David Sore
A Journey Round the World describes a great personal adventure involving a world cycle tour completed between 1966 and 1969, involving 35,000 miles of cycling. While most British cyclists invariably set off through Europe and Asia, the author headed west to America. The first stage involved a journey across the North American continent, crossing the Prairies and travelling through the Rocky Mountains. The route planned enabled the author to visit numerous relatives, many of them descendants of an earlier generation who answered the call to go out and open up the wide open spaces. Following conventional work in Vancouver, the second stage involved perhaps one of the most comprehensive cycle tours of the American West ever undertaken, including many of the great National Parks.
After leaving school, David Sore served an apprenticeship with a large electrical company. Influenced by fellow students, he made his first cycle tour in North Wales in 1960. Tours in Europe during following summers served as an excellent apprenticeship for a world tour embarked on in the spring of 1966.
