Judge Sewall's Apology by Richard Francis

The Salem witch trials of 1692 are remembered as a notorious example of injustice. Judge Samuel Sewall presided over the trials, in which the condemned were faced with harsh and at times lethal judgment. But five years later, Sewall publicly recanted his guilty verdicts and begged for forgiveness.

In Judge Sewall's Apology, Richard Francis draws on Sewall's own diaries to reveal a complex man who tried to remain true to his own ideals. Sewall was a Puritan, an antislavery agitator, a defender of Native American rights, and a Utopian theorist. He lived in a culture that stood at the threshold between the Old World and the New, in a time when what we call the "modern thinking" was still a new concept. In this gripping book, Francis shows us a society at a turning point in its history, and a man who, in many ways, was ahead of his times.Richard Francis is a biographer, historian of American culture, and novelist. He was an American Studies Research Fellow at Harvard, and taught American literature at the universities of Missouri and Manchester. He is now Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University in England."Gives voice to the world in which Sewall lived. Francis decrypts his microcosm with skill, conjuring a recognizably moral man and the increasingly complex community in which he came of age." -- Washington Post Book World
