The Kagero Diary by Sonja Arntzen
Japan is the only country in the world where it was primarily the works of women writers that laid the foundation for the classical literary tradition. The Kagero Diary is the first extant work of that rich and brilliant tradition. Sonja Arntzen received her Ph.D. in Japanese Literature from the University of British columbia and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta. In addition to numerous articles, she has published two books on the life and poetry of the Muromachi-period Zen monk, Ikkyu Sojun: The Crazy Cloud Anthology of Ikkyu Sojun (1986), and Ikkyu Sojun: A Zen Monk and His Poetry (1973). She is actively involved in the promotion of Japanese art and theater in Canada.
