King Beetle-Tamer by Isabel Wyatt

Orfeo grew up into a merry gossoon (as long and lean as two yards of pump water), taking care before lying down in the grass to warn the local insects and creeping things to get away safely... Beetles, mice and birds all help Orfeo to free the princess from the Rose Tower. This collection of 15 fairy tales is written by a weaver of magic. The tales are filled with unicorns and fairies, magic and wonder. And in this magic the princess sometimes rescues the prince!
Isabel Wyatt was born in England in 1901. She spent many years teaching young children and was then, until her retirement in 1965, co-director of studies at Hawkwood College in Gloucestershire. She wrote many books for children, including The Book of Fairy Princes. She died in 1992.
