Kingdom of the Film Stars by Annie Caulfield
This volume is both a travel book and a love story. Anne Caulfield writes of travelling in Jordan and falling in love with a Bedouin. Her narrative offers insights into the country - from the traditional tent life of nomadic tribes to the first woman MPs battle with fundamentalist colleagues. Many Western myths about the Arab world are unpicked by the author, but this is not an impersonal analysis as the cultural and political issues presented are all set within the framework of a love story.
Annie Caulfield wrote the Grim Tales series, many sketches for The Real McCoy, episodes of This Life, jokes for Comic Relief, and writes for Aardman's Planet Scetch. She has written jokes and plays for Lenny Henry and once made a documentary in Africa with Spice Girl, Mel B. Sometimes Annie co-hosts a radio chat show with Sandi Toksvig, but for a lot of the time she lives in a cave house in Spain, thinking up stories and learning to ride a horse without falling off.
