Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg by Christoph Hackelsberger

Prior to its opening in May 1994, the building of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg had already attracted wide attention. Its architectural language and precise design logic enter into a productive dialogue with the purpose of the building: the exhibition of modern art. Many new museum buildings erected in recent years have not prompted much attention because the inevitable question of whether they are suitable to the presentation of art was not explicitly answered; rather, the presentation of the architecture itself was often of greater importance. The Museum of the Volkswagen Art Foundation presents self-confident architecture combined with optimum exhibition spaces, carefully elaborated details and a transparent sequence of rooms. It was designed by the architectural firm of Schweger and Partner who aimed to present a building of inherent architectural worth that was nevertheless specifically suitable for the exhibition of modern art.
